STEM Degree Show 2020
Project Overview
The project encompasses the research and design necessary for an automotive fuel tank, capable of storing liquid ammonia. This fuel could then be used to power either hydrogen vehicles (through the use of a cracker) or direct ammonia fuel cells. Through the use of FE modelling and mathematical analysis, the final design was found to be within safety limits, incorporating an aluminium inner tank, along with a carbon filament wound wrap. The tank is able to store 60L of liquid ammonia at pressures of only 8.5bar, which would equate to the same amount of hydrogen found in recent vehicles, albeit at much higher pressures.
Why did you choose this course?
After a long period of being undecided on what to study at further education, I decided to combine things I enjoyed with subjects I was good at. As I enjoy doing practical tasks, along with anything to do with vehicles, and found mathematical subjects such as Mathematics and Physics to be my best subjects, it became clear that engineering, and in particular Motorsport/Automotive, would be a good fit for me.
